Lobostemon cinereus DC. & A.DC.
NE Indigenous Endemic

Morphological description

Resprouting shrub, 40-80 cm high. Branches caulous to acrocaulous, antrorse, herbaceous branches hairy, woody branches glabrescent. Leaves herbaceous, cauline, transversely applanate to incurved, longitudinally straight to slightly naviculate, dead basal leaves not persistent, (14-)18-26(-32) x (2.0-)2.5-3.5(-5.0) mm, narrowly oblong to lanceolate, adaxially copiously hairy, abaxially copiously hairy, indumentum mostly appressed, hairs dissimilar in length (2 distinct length classes), trichomes simple or pustular, the simple, short hairs dominating the pustular, long hairs abaxially, the latter sometimes presenting a gland-dotted appearance; leaf margin entire; apex acute; mid-vein abaxially unobtrusive. Inflorescence of many flowered, compound cincinni, young flowering axis compact, flower buds loosely arranged to form a globose unit, spreading in fruiting stage. Bracts (4-)5-8(-10) x 0.5-1.5(-2.0) mm, lanceolate to ovate. Flowers small (anterior petals 17-30 mm long), more than three per cymule, funnel-shaped. Sepals lanceolate, less than half of corolla length, similar to dissimilar in width, free, adaxially and abaxially copiously hairy; young apices applanate, brown trichomes on the adaxial surface wanting. Petals dissimilar, the anterior petal lobes larger than the rest, posterior petals ca. 8-10 mm long, posterior petal lobes ca. 1.5-2.0 mm long, anterior petals ca. 10-12 mm long, anterior petal lobes ca. 2-3 mm long, white-cream to pale pink; abaxially glabrous. Stamens dissimilar in length, exserted in adult flowers; anthers dorsifixed; filaments free from petals to shortly adnate (< 5 mm) above staminal scales. Staminal scales inserted below the throat of the corolla tube, 2 mm above the base of the corolla tube, usually well-developed, triangular, lateral lobes present, villous, area between scales also hairy. Style median sections hairy. Mericarpids narrowly ovoid-trigonous; tuberculate, hairs present; lateral ridges inconspicuous; dorsal side acute; dorsal keel wanting; ventral keel wanting. Shrub, 0.6-1 m tall. Leaves sessile, linear-lanceolate, hairy, with numerous short, ash-coloured hairs on both surfaces and interspersed with bulbous-based hairs on lower surface, appearing gland-dotted. Flowers in cymes, white, sometimes pale pink, staminal scales slightly triangular with lateral lobes, style glabrous. From: Buys, MH. 2013. Boraginaceae: Lobostemon. In: DA Snijman (ed.), Plants of the Greater Cape Floristic Region 2: The Extra Cape flora. Strelitzia 30: 335-336. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]

Like L. trichotomus but leaves with ash-coloured hairs on both surfaces and bulbous-based hairs on lower surface, flowers white, sometimes pale pink, style glabrous. From: Buys, MH. 2012. Diagnostic description

Lobostemon cinereus can be distinguished by having a unique indumentum type: hairs are dimorphic, and the short hairs predominate the long hairs (in contrast to e.g. L. fruticosus where the long hairs predominate the short hairs). In addition, the leaves, taking on an ash-grey appearance because of the indumentum, also appear to be gland-dotted from below due to the swollen bases of the spinous hairs. From: Buys, MH. 2011. Revision of Lobostemon (Boraginaceae). Phytotaxa 37: 1-131. [http://dx.doi.org/10.11646/phytotaxa.37.1.1] [All rights reserved]

Habitat

Prefers the sandy soils that predominate on the west coast, but also occurs in the Cedarberg where these soils can be found. From: Buys, MH. 2011. Revision of Lobostemon (Boraginaceae). Phytotaxa 37: 1-131. [http://dx.doi.org/10.11646/phytotaxa.37.1.1] [All rights reserved]
