Robust to slender shrub or dwarf shrub to 2000 mm high, erect, densely tufted or sprawling; rhizomes long, robust; culm branches usually fascicled from nodes, rarely solitary; plant glabrous and smooth, except upper and basal leaf sheaths, which are adpressed woolly hairy; leaf blades break off early, leaving the sheaths, and exposing the upper part of the internode, which is usually dark, giving the characteristic banded appearance. Leaf blade 60-100 mm long, setaceous, often pungent. Inflorescence elongate, narrow, interrupted; spikelets clustered. Spikelet 15-30 mm long (including awns); glumes straw-coloured; upper glume 10-14 mm long; lemma articulation at about middle of lemma; beak short, twisted; all three awns plumose; callus 1.5 mm long, apex naked, pungent; anther 4.7-6.0 mm long. General notes: Mainly road gravel. Occasional but further north very common along road. Perennial with a coarse, knotty creeping rhizome and thick sand-coated roots. Loosely tufted, can be large, with culms up to 180cm high, many noded with shoots, these have wide sheaths and often small blades. Leaves light dull green, the narrow, mostly 12-32cm long, feathery and white from the 3 plumose awns of the lemmas, the lateral noticeably shorter than the central awn. Veld type: Acocks 34 Strandveld

Growing with Cladoraphs spinosa, Devera burchellii, Salsola sp. (S. glabrescens?), Zygophyllum microphyllum. Frequent. Veld type: succulent Karoo.

General notes: Relatively undisturbed road reserve in a faintly marked drainage line. Sand overlying calcrete. Very occasional - a few widely scattered clumps noted. Perennial, coarse, 165cm high. Much branched , with tufts of spiny leaves from the nodes, many of these with culms and panicles. Culms dark purple - conspicuous where exerted from the sheaths. Inflor. spike-like, spikelets straw-coloured.
